April 17, 2002 - Coyote's, Winnipeg, Manitoba:
Ahhh... now this is the time of day all musicians love! Up at 3am... which means to bed by, um... okay, I guess we don't go to bed... our flight leaves at 7am, so we have to be at the airport at 5:30... oh well, we can sleep when we're dead right?
Coyote's reminds me of the clubs that once existed in Vancouver before the majority of the public decided it would rather listen and dance to a CD or Karoake... this place is huge and has a great atmosphere! And the manager obviously knows how to promote an event, because it's packed with people... and the girls! Wow. I didn't think there were that many good looking women in that part of the world... there's a raised walkway by the bar in this club, with rails and steps leading up to it... and there are girls dancing up there all night... another cool thing about his club is the DJ setup... there are a couple of computer terminals downstairs (in the club), where people can request a song to the DJ upstairs... pretty cool...
Doug has managed to lose the wheelchair for this gig - still using crutches though, for now... and for those of you who haven't heard yet, Doug pulled his groin muscle during a particularly difficult dance move - but he is getting better and Twyla assures us he'll be back dancing soon...
There is a group of three or
four guys at this gig who provide most of the band's entertainment... one of
them keeps taking his shirt off on the dance floor, then the security woman
makes him put it back on, then he takes it off... etc... sometime during the
night, she gets tired of this game and reprimands him right on the dance floor...
and this guy and one of his friends make a sandwich out of her, using her as
the filling... at least they took her seriously!
Later, when Doug launches into his attack on breast enlargement surgery and has various volunteers come up onstage to prove that their breasts are real, this same guy comes up to the stage. He takes his shirt off, grabs Doug's head and smothers it into his chest while slapping Doug's ass... this guy was great! Now if he'd just work on that shyness thing... there's an opening act here too - Jukebox Hero - and they sound great... I'm only there for 4 or 5 songs, but a couple of originals really sound like they're on the right track... keep your ears and eyes open for these guys!
We've played Winnipeg many times before, but this is the most fun I remember having here... way to go Winnipeg... you guys rock! And hi to Debbie and Vince... and any friends I forgot!
See you next time.
Marc.
