We've got a bit of time off right now, but I'll see
you back here soon! Look out, Kamloops! The Slugs are slithering your way soon!
Just about two hours northeast of Edmonton is a small town
on a lake, called Lac La Biche. Never heard of it before. The population is made
up largely of the Metis people… and they rock! We're there for two nights and
Dallas (not sure what his title is - he seemed to do everything), treats us very,
very well. Thanks Dallas!
Friday night is a great crowd. People are dancing from the second song through
to the end of the show. This is Loren Etkin's first show with the band (drums)
and he does amazingly well… looking a little like Jerry Garcia behind the drums,
reading glasses on to read the charts, but you'd never know he hadn't played
with us before to hear him. Good job Loren! The entire night, however, we play
through a low, droning hum on the stage. The audience doesn't hear it - it's
only audible to us. But we don't know what it is. Not until the next day when
Mike (our soundman), tired of our complaints, comes down to the bar and figures
it out. Apparently, one of Loren's monitors is pointing directly underneath
the hollow stage. That'll do it. It's much better the next night.
Saturday night: well, the sound is better at least. It's not nearly as busy as
the Friday night. That's what happens when you only advertise one night I guess.
Three women from neighbouring Boyle save the night. They are great! Doug Bennett
gets them to sing the chorus for Mustang Sally (becoming a regular song in our
list)… and they actually harmonize! They sound good! Sorry for the extra enthusiasm
here, but we're not used to members of the audience actually being able to sing.
Doug
tells the audience that he'd like to move there and become their mayor… this
is kind of funny as the mayor of the town also owns the bar… luckily he stops
short of actually campaigning.
